The monsoon in five lines

  • Caused by differential heating of land and sea and seasonal reversal of winds.
  • South-west monsoon (June to September) brings most of India's rain.
  • Two branches: Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal.
  • Western Ghats cause heavy windward (western coast) rain by orographic lift.
  • Retreating (north-east) monsoon (October to December) brings rain to Tamil Nadu coast.
