Worked notes on the trickier items

  • Q85. Code rule: each letter advances by one position in the alphabet. M to N, O to P, O to P, N to O gives NPPO. Option (b) NPPP is the common distractor (it wrongly advances the last N to P).
  • Q89. Take cost price 100. Marked price is 140. A 25 per cent discount on 140 is 35, so selling price is 105, a profit of 5 per cent.
  • Q90. For an odd count of consecutive even numbers, the average equals the middle term. Numbers are 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, so the largest is 40.
  • Q96. The shift pattern is fixed at +2,+3,+4,+5,+6,+7. Check on FRIEND: F+2=H, R+3=U, I+4=M, E+5=J, N+6=T, D+7=K gives HUMJTK. Apply the same to CANDLE: C+2=E, A+3=D, N+4=R, D+5=I, L+6=R, E+7=L gives EDRIRL. The L+6 and E+7 steps are the ones examiners most often miscount.
  • Q99. North 5, then east 3 (turn right while facing north), then south 5 (turn right while facing east) returns to the original north-south line but 3 km east, so the straight-line distance is 3 km.
